Meet Sherry Borshoff, the face of Borshoff Consulting, LLC. Get to know “Indiana’s Tax Expert” as she shares valuable tax tips, the importance of building client trust, and her favorite mantra to live by.

Where was your mindset when you began Borshoff Consulting in 2011?

When I started my company in 2011, I decided to create an opportunity for myself. I put together a business plan that could help other small businesses out there who couldn’t afford to pay someone a salary as a full-time controller. Along the way, I figured I should look into renewing licenses, tax planning for folks, and over time it grew into being a full-service tax consulting firm.

My heart is in helping small businesses, I want to see them thrive. With Borshoff Consulting, small businesses AND individuals can have access to quality assistance. There are other companies that are not focused on the resolution, however, I am focused on the resolution.

Why do you feel it is important to be known as a local business?

Although I have clients all over the United States, most people like the personal touch. The trust factor is more important most times than price, especially in the midwest (i.e. Indiana). You must have a high trust factor with your accounting and tax professional, so engaging with someone who is local is usually the best scenario for developing that trusting relationship.

What advice would you give to those thinking of starting their own business?

There’s an old saying: “Nobody knows how much you know until they know you much you care.” I am somebody who cares and is an expert in this field. I love this quote so much, I adopted it as my personal mantra.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your experience consulting?

You have to have a passion for helping your clients and acknowledge their vision in order to assist them. You need to get behind them as an advocate with the taxing agencies and make sure they understand each step of the process.

Additionally, building client relationships involves trust. Have a network of folks to bring to the table (including referrals that are usually local).

What is the biggest challenge in your industry?

As an entrepreneur, you have much more on your plate than a typical W2 employee. However, my schedule is more flexible now than when I had a controllership job. One of the biggest adjustments I encountered when I started my business was that instead of working for one company, I now work for hundreds.

Any plans for the near future?

I have been preparing to launch a YouTube channel! I want to provide something that’s instructional for people. I am passionate about providing educational resources because my clients should understand all the responsibilities they are taking on.

What is one fun fact about your business that people may not know about?

I write blog posts on a weekly basis that tackle common tax-related questions for small business owners! They are free and accessible to anyone. You can check them out here.
