As utility relocation activity continues on E Market Street ahead of street infrastructure improvements beginning later this year, the Original Farmers’ Market plans to relocate to Monument Circle for the remainder of its 2020 season, beginning tomorrow, May 13. A program of the Indianapolis City Market, the Original Farmers’ Market traditionally hosts local vendors along E Market Street, between Delaware and Alabama streets, providing produce and other fresh products on Wednesdays between May and October.

The Original Farmers’ Market will continue in its new location on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., rain or shine. More information—including measures to ensure the safety of participants in response to the COVID-19 pandemic—can be found at the Indianapolis City Market website.

The upcoming Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) project ST-25-161D will reconstruct E Market Street, between Delaware and Alabama streets, including traffic calming measures, storm water management features, and pedestrian infrastructure upgrades. While utility relocation activity continues this spring causing intermittent closures along this block of Market Street, construction is expected to begin later this summer under full roadway closure.

The street infrastructure improvements comprise increased safety and accessibility measures for pedestrians moving between the City-County Building and the Indianapolis City Market, all while maintaining parking capacity along Market Street as well as the capability to host the Original Farmers’ Market in the future.

A public open house was held at the Indianapolis City Market in July 2019 to answer questions from the public and present design plans for the project, an investment of more than $6 million in the improvement of the Market East downtown district.
