Raising Awareness During Domestic Violence Awareness Month: What You Need to Know

October has been nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month since 1989, and has served as an important time to highlight the prevalence of domestic violence and sexual assault, acknowledge the victims and survivors of abuse, and learn how to recognize and respond to signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. Moreover, it is a vital time to support organizations that serve those affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse. Beacon of Hope, a Crisis Center for Hoosiers affected by domestic violence and sexual assault and Indiana Owned member, provides crucial services to victims and survivors. As we raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout October, it is important to understand what those terms mean, why these issues are so pervasive, and what we can do to help.

The Prevalence of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is an unfortunately prevalent issue that affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds. It is important to recognize that domestic violence can occur in any relationship, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Domestic Violence Network noted in their 2022 report entitled The State of Domestic Violence,“In Indiana, 40.4% of women and 26.8% of men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetime.” Teen dating abuse is also a serious concern. Given its pervasive nature, it is crucial to support organizations like Beacon of Hope that contribute to the prevention of domestic violence through crisis call intervention, advocacy assistance, safety planning, and other vital services to Hoosiers affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Recognizing Signs of Domestic Violence

It is crucial to be able to recognize the signs of domestic violence in order to effectively support victims and survivors. Domestic violence can manifest in various ways, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse. Physical signs may include unexplained injuries, frequent visits to the doctor, or a change in behavior. Emotional abuse can involve manipulation, control, or belittling comments. Sexual abuse may be indicated by a lack of consent or coercion. Financial abuse often involves controlling the victim’s finances or limiting their access to money. It is important to be aware of these signs and take them seriously. If you suspect someone is a victim of domestic violence, encourage them to seek help and provide information about resources like Beacon of Hope, who offer a wide range of services including safety planning, emotional support, and victim legal protections (protective orders).

Getting Help from a Crisis Center

Domestic violence is not a one-time occurrence; it often follows a pattern known as the cycle of domestic violence. Understanding this cycle is crucial for recognizing and addressing the issue. The cycle typically consists of three phases: tension-building, acute violence, and the honeymoon phase. In the tension-building phase, small arguments escalate, tension increases, and the victim often feels on edge. This is followed by the acute violence phase, where the actual abuse occurs, which can be physical, emotional, or sexual in nature. After the acute violence phase comes the honeymoon phase, where the abuser apologizes, promises to change, and often showers the victim with love and affection. This cycle repeats itself, becoming increasingly severe over time. Breaking the cycle requires intervention and support from organizations like Beacon of Hope, who offer safety planning, counseling, and other services to help survivors navigate the cycle and find a way out.

How Beacon of Hope Helps Survivors

Beacon of Hope is a domestic violence Crisis Center that offers a wide range of services to support survivors. One of the key ways Beacon of Hope helps survivors is through safety planning. Safety planning involves creating a personalized plan to ensure the survivor’s physical and emotional well-being. This plan includes steps to take in case of emergencies, resources for finding safe housing, and strategies for protecting oneself from further harm. In addition to safety planning, Beacon of Hope also offers an Economic Stability Program that focuses on helping survivors rebuild their lives and regain their independence. This program offers resources and support in areas such as financial stability, education, and job training. By empowering survivors to become self-sufficient, Beacon of Hope helps them break free from the cycle of abuse and build a brighter future. Through their comprehensive services, Beacon of Hope is committed to helping survivors navigate the healing process and find safety, support, and empowerment.

Taking Action to End Domestic Violence

Taking action to end domestic violence is crucial in creating a safer and more compassionate society. One way to contribute to this cause is by supporting organizations like Beacon of Hope that offer resources and support to help survivors break free from the cycle of abuse and regain their independence. Throughout the month of October, Indiana Owned will match all donations up to $7,500. Beacon of Hope is also hosting a silent auction for a luxury luggage set. Together, we can make a difference and create a world free from abuse.
