Our History, Mission and Philosophies

Abbey Caskets was established in 1999 and is owned and operated by the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. Abbey Caskets supports the prayer and works of Saint Meinrad Archabbey by offering handcrafted wooden caskets, cremation urns and keepsake crosses directly to the public. Each high-quality casket and urn is built, to the specifications of the monks, in our workshop by local craftsmen from hardwoods such as cherry, walnut, oak, and poplar.

Visitors are welcome to tour our on-site workshop and view our handcrafted products. Tours are available during business hours Monday through Friday.

We also offer a prepay program where a customer can pay for their casket in advance and “lock-in” the cost at today’s prices. This option relieves loved ones from one of the burdens of planning a funeral.

Our products reflect the sacred traditions of the Benedictine monks, while honoring the deceased’s own values, dignity and individuality. Moderately priced, each Abbey Casket and cremation urn features a removable keepsake cross.

Abbey Caskets offers a simple product and offers it as a way for the monks to share with others what God has given to Saint Meinrad. The true aim of this particular work is the same aim of monastic life: That in all things God may be glorified.
